Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation

Special Commendation

The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation is devoted to introducing design innovation at the center of university life, preparing students to address some of society’s most pressing challenges. The project is a team-based, project-centric educational space and a compelling symbol to the region of the University’s commitment to sustainable innovation. The project exceeds the AIA’s 2030 Commitment goal for energy and carbon reduction, using 90 percent less energy than baseline per 2008 Title 24 and Energy Star Target Finder. It is on track for LEED Platinum certification.

The jury commented that the compact urban site of this College of Engineering building dictates much of its tight efficient form which cantilevers over an existing basement yet maintains an open solar court to the south. The cantilevered photovoltaic array combines with an impressive variety of smart strategies for a reduction of total grid energy use by 90%. The largely open and engaging plan facilitates interaction and engagement between students and faculty while maximizing daylight and natural ventilation.
